Charity Cars in the News: Cars are more than wheels to abuse, hurricane survivors

For the 23-year-old mother of two young children, it is an 11-hour round-trip commute via public transportation to and from her Chicago home to school in the suburbs, a 16.4-mile one-way journey that Mapquest says can be completed in 22 minutes by car. “I take nine buses, two trains, and I spend $40 on a taxi to get to school,” she said.

On Sunday, she joined the car-driving masses when she was handed the keys to a 1992 Toyota Corolla as part of the Bumper to Bumper Charity Cars Campaign, an event where 101 cars were donated to domestic violence victims and six families that survived Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
